B.Sc. Integrated Development Studies

Background Information
The Programme is being offered in line with the mission of the E.P. University College, that is, to establish an institution of excellence aimed at preparing people to serve the varied needs of the Ghanaian Community. The Programme is a aimed at preparing Senior Management Personnel in the field of Planning and Land Use.

The Problem
It has been observed that planners and implementers of Ghana’s various developmental programmes tend to limit their perspectives to single or restricted sectors of the economy. It is yet common knowledge that the problems which our developmental programmes seek to address are rather multi-sectoral and require an integrated approach. This programme seeks to address this problem with specific focus on land, land use and the environment in Ghana’s developmental agenda.

Programme Philosophy
The programme shall equip the student with the relevant knowledge, planning skills and appropriate attitudes needed to prepare the student to learn how to play their role of environmental planners, land uses and land economy planners. The BSc Integrated Develoment Studies Programme is a combined Programme made up of various components put together from such interrelated areas as the environment, economics, law, management, planning, sociology and politics, with developmental issues as the common base of interest.

Programme Structure and Objectives
The Programme is a blend of some developmental issues relating to such areas as land and land use, environmental degradation, agribusiness, physical planning (urban and rural), and micro economics.  The programme’s focus is on the environment and human activities connected with planning, urbanization, agriculture, industry and small scale entrepreneurship in Ghana.

Students will be sent out and be attached to departments, organizations, NGOs, etc in the rural communities in the Volta region and other parts of the country and be led to identify the problems of development in the areas of concern and will be required to find possible solutions to them. The B.Sc Integrated Development Studies Programme is a basic course intended to lead to higher Programmes in Town and Country Planning, Statistics and Development, Environmental Protection and Agribusiness. Having graduated from the programme, the graduates can gain employment into the District Assemblies, work with Non-Governmental Organizations, Development Agencies, Environmental Agencies, Research Stations, etc.
