B.Sc Business Administration (Credit Management And Finance)

Programme Philosophy and Objectives:

Credit plays a vital role in socio –economic development of every nation. Most enterprises in Ghana are inhibited by the fact that the institutions and people in positions to offer credit facilities are reluctant to offer such facilities for fear that when granted, the recoupment of such credits will be in danger.  At the same time, the recipients of such credit facilities are incapable of managing the credits facilities properly for lack of knowledge, skills and the right attitude.

 

This Programme is intended to prepare Management Personnel of Organisations involved in providing Credit in the form funds, goods, services and facilities to customers and other stakeholders. The programme will assist students to identify the various categories of credits, the conditions attached to them, and the risks connected with their management and repayment. Attention will be given to core areas of study that will enable the student to be equipped to deal comprehensively with the issues of credit management. These core areas include;

  • Management ( 7 courses)
  • Accounting ( 5 courses)
  • Finance ( 5 courses)
  • Law ( 4 courses)
  • Statistics ( 4 courses)
  • Information Technology ( 4 courses)

The courses in these specialized areas will be preceded by various common courses that will lay the foundation for the programme. There are different career options open to students who enroll in the programme. These include positions for Credit Administrators or Credit Controllers, Credit Supervisors/Team Leaders, Assistant Credit Managers and Credit Managers in Banks, Credit Unions, Mortgage Companies, Finance Companies, and Savings and Loan Associations.
There is also a wide variety of job roles for graduates in Credit Management and Finance. These include:

  • Credit Risk Analyst,
  • Credit Underwriter,
  • Export Credit Controller,
  • Debt Recovery Manager,
  • Litigation Specialist,
  • Accounts Receivable Manager,
  • Financial Statement Analyst,
  • Tax Manager,
  • International Banking Manager,
  • Insurance Manager,
  • Treasurer/Financial Controller,
  • Finance Officer.

The programme will also prepare students to pursue other Credit Management and Finance related programmes and grant them exemption from writing some professional examinations. For example, Institute of Credit Management UK. 
Admission Requirements

To qualify for the Programme, candidates must:

Level 100

  • possess five credit passes at ‘O’ Level including English and Mathematics in Business/Arts subjects plus two/ three passes at ‘A’ Level excluding General. Candidates with relevant GBCE and ABCE will also be considered.
  • be SSSCE/WASSCE holder with passes in six subjects; three core subjects - English, Mathematics and Social Studies/Integrated Science, plus three Elective Subjects in Business/General Arts. SSSCE: aggregate 24 or better; grade E not accepted. WASSCE: Aggregate 36 or better; grades D7 and E8 not accepted.
  • be mature candidate aged 25 years and above with at least two years relevant work experience in such areas as Banking and Non-Banking Financial Institutions, Entrepreneurship and Financial Sections of other organizations, and must have passed the E. P. University College Placement Examinations.
  • The placement examinations comprise of General Paper (compulsory), Program-related Paper, English Language, and Mathematics. Candidates must pass all papers to qualify for admission. The placement examination will be moderated by the mentor university (UCC).
  • DBS with credit passes in English and Mathematics at SSSCE/WASSCE

Level 200

  • Pass in Higher National Diploma (HND), Part 1/ Level 1 of ICA, ACCA, CIMA and CIB.
  • Diploma in Basic Education (DBE)
  • Professional Certificate/Diploma

Level 300

  • Relevant HND holders with 2nd Class Lower and better or must have other relevant Diplomas from recognized Universities/Institutions or possess relevant Professional Certificate eg. Part II/ Level II of ICA, ACCA, CIMA or CIB.

Foreign Students
Foreign students with qualifications equivalent to those mentioned above will be considered for admission at the appropriate level.  However, applicants from Francophone and other non-English speaking countries must attach to their applications evidence of Proficiency in English. All foreign certificates shall be referred to National Accreditation Board for determination of equivalence.
