Background Information

The Programme is being offered in line with the mission of the E.P. University College, to establish an institution of excellence aimed at preparing students to serve the varied needs of Ghanaian communities. The Programme offers professional training in social and community development by equipping students with the knowledge and skills relevant for interventions in development processes towards the improvement of the social and economic wellbeing of people in Ghana and the developing world in general.

Programme Philosophy
The programme draws ideas from various disciplines and includes such areas as adult education, community development, psychology, sociology, social work, social impact of technology, family and societal interactions, conflict resolution and mediation and sustainable development with community development issues at the centre stage.  It is intended to equip the student with the relevant knowledge, and practical skills needed to prepare them to play their role as Development Facilitators.

Rationale
Ghana as a developing country needs development experts and professionals to accelerate the processes and space of development. There are numerous vacancies both existing and potential in public and private development institutions that need to be filled. The development facilitators need both the academic and practical experience to enable them cope with the changing trends in the effort to develop the nation.  The law establishing the University College mandates it to blend academic work with the needs of the community in order to provide constructive interaction between the two for the total development of Ghana. The course is therefore modelled on an integrated approach where students and lecturers of the department engage communities together and in a holistic manner aimed at finding solutions to development problems in society.

Aims
The course seeks to provide students with the necessary intellectual acumen, practical skills and the technical abilities required to analyse development issues and develop the capacity to implement development programmes and projects particularly at the district and community levels.  It also aimed at producing graduates with logical and analytical skills in identifying societal problems, causes and effect of underdevelopment of African Societies as well as finding ways to transform the economy of the people of Ghana and Africa as a whole. The programme will enable students to understand accelerated and sustainable development and the various means by which Ghana can achieve accelerated and sustainable development.
