REV. DR SETRI NYOMI - COUNCIL CHAIRMAN

Rev. Dr. Setri Nyomi - Council Chairman

The Rev. Dr. Setri Nyomi, is the immediate past General Secretary of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches (WARC), a theologian by profession. Dr. Nyomi received a major portion of his education through Christian public schools in Ghana. His theological studies began at the University of Ghana, Legon, and Trinity Theological Seminary in the 1970s. He received a Master of Sacred Theology degree from Yale University Divinity School and a Ph.D. in Pastoral Theology from Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, New Jersey.

He was ordained in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Ghana in August 1980. Dr. Nyomi has served as parish pastor in both Ghana and the USA. Prior to his taking up as the General Secretary of WARC, Dr. Nyomi spent six years with the All Africa Conference of Churches as a Senior Executive. He was in charge of Theology, Christian and Family Life Education. He also coordinated the Seventh Assembly of the AACC. Before then he taught at the Trinity Theological Seminary in Legon, Ghana. Between 1984 and 1991 he was Vice Moderator of the Youth Working Group of the World Council of Churches.

His first experience outside Ghana dates back to 1972-73 when he spent a year in Vicksburg, Mississippi, USA, as an exchange student on AFS International/Intercultural Programs (head office in New York). That year, in which he was hosted by an African-American family, meant a lot to him, and has since then had a great impact on his ministry. He states regularly that his commitment to addressing injustice in any form—racism, sexism—and the call for Christians to place value on the sacredness of life, human wholeness, and dignity for all began as a result of the impact the 1972-1973 experience had on him. From 1977 to 1981 he served on the Board of Trustees for AFS International Programs (at the time the youngest ever and first African member).

Dr. Nyomi is married to Akpene Esther. They have three children.

He took up his current responsibility as the Chairman of the Evangelical Presbyterian University College, Ho in October 2015. He thus became the fourth Chairman of the University Colleges’ Council.
